Wildfire

Rose Street, Edinburgh

visited 26/5/10

This is a popular place that always scores highly in online reviews. Things got off to a good start with they answered the phone on the second ring and found us a table to 6 people for 8.00 the next day. And Wildfire continued to be a friendly, efficient and obliging place. It’s a single room that makes good use of its space--bigger tables get plenty of space although smaller ones looked a bit squashed. The interior walls use the original stone and it feels cosy but pretty stylish

Wildfire bills itself as a steak and seafood place. I started with mussels which were OK--the liquor needed a bit more wine and the mussels could have been plumper, but fine for the price. Then I had a sirloin steak--again OK but it was a bit woolly and came with standard issue straw chips. I must admit to being underwhelmed by the whole food experience at Wildfire. If you're specialising in something it should be really great--properly matured, flavourful steak and some handcut chips. I sampled a few other things which I liked--some stovies, and some chicken liver pate. I might come again and try the home-cooking type dishes that were elsewhere on the menu.
