The Pink Olive

West Nicholson St, Edinburgh

visited 18/9/2008

This is a new restaurant in the old Phenecia site and it's a great innovation. The room is straightforwardly laid out, not too crowded with tables. Limited menu with clean, direct flavours and really good ingredients. We had a wasabi smoked salmon--perfectly OK but not much evidence of wasabi. Then a perfect leg of rabbit with puy lentils--rich, meaty bunny, well flavoured lentils. A great earthy dish for autumn. I had a creamy creme brulee in which was fine, properly flavoured with vanilla, but my companion's pudding was the one the one to go for: a wonderful chocolate fondant that was both intense and light. There's a decent selection of reasonably-priced house wines, though our tempranillo was a bit bland. Service was great.

This is restaurant one could eat at every week. The cooking is several notches above the price, and the menu is cannily chosen to tempt you in different directions. In an area not known for its restaurants (Home Bistro an honourable exception) this one goes to the top of the list.
